Harvey Park is located in the coastal town of St Leonard’s on the Bellarine Peninsula, 35 km south of the Geelong CBD.
The park is frequented by local residents and an influx of tourists during the summer months.
As part of an ongoing initiative, the City of Greater Geelong identified a need to replace outdated public toilets in parks throughout greater Geelong. This program saw the city upgrading a variety of facilities to ensure they were safe for use, clean and accessible whilst adhering to CPTED principals.
You can read more about CPTED principals and what they entail, here.
The facility required adequate ventilation, be wheelchair accessible and adhere to CPTED principals to prevent vandalism opportunities. It would also need to be built to withstand the harsh coastal climate, with external showers and drinking fountains.
ASCO was selected as the head contractor for this project, including the demolition of existing buildings, and the design, fabrication and installation of the new facilities.
What was a key challenge here? This was honestly very straight forward project. Demolition of the old building was necessary and connecting the new building into the existing infrastructure did have some challenges – for example; re-wiring the sewer pump station that no-one had records of any information about.
ASCO was awarded the contract in late 2017 and the facility was open for use by February 2018.
The result was a functional, accessible, and safe facility for the community and visitors of St Leonards. This facility has been put to the test during the summer months where the town sees an influx of travellers to the area.
